The String Quartet op. 27 is the only string quartet composed by Edvard Grieg (1843-1907). Written in 1877-78, it was created on 29 October 1878. This melancholic and dramatic piece of music was written in the purest romantic style.

Karol Szymanowski put the finishing touches to his second String Quartet, op. 56 at the end of November or at the beginning of December 1927, at the end of several weeks’ work. It had to wait another two years to be performed in Warsaw. Viewed as one of the most difficult and avant-garde pieces of music in Karol Szymanowski’s oeuvre, both in terms of the arrangement and composition and expressiveness, this piece is the perfect example of the way folklore was integrated into a classical framework in order to create a resolutely modern language (as one can also find in music by Bartok and Enesco). For this string quartet, Szymanowski incorporates music typically found in the Podhale mountains into a pure work of music.
