Marcin Wasilewski Trio

Flagey, Brussels
15/10/09
A pianist with a light touch and elegant phrasing, a smooth double bass, a percussion section measured out in punctuated beats and sudden breaks in rhythm: Poland presents a radiant trio which just gets better and better. The complicity and chemistry produced when the members play music together can be explained by the fact that they have been making music for a long time, either on their own or alongside trumpeter Tomasz Stańko or percussionist Manu Katché.
There are no pointless effects, no virtuoso performances – rather, the trio belongs firmly within the register of gentle melodies and misty structures in a climate of great clarity and tranquil beauty. Their second album, January, is a small, ethereal jewel, alternating between well-chosen reprises (Prince’s Diamonds And Pearls, Ennio Morricone’s Cinema Paradiso, etc) and compositions which reveal a considerable maturity.
