Literature Night (La Nuit de la Littérature européenne) is a European literary project organised by EUNIC in Brussels, of which the Polish Institute is a member, and consists of a ‘voyage around’ several readings by European authors. On 16 May, from 19:00 until 22:00, the public will be able to stroll from one place to the next in order to find out more about fourteen European writers.
The text Czempion odchodzi(Le Champion se retire) by Marek Bieńczyk has been selected. This text is one of the chapters in the writer’s latest book Książka Twarzy – which in 2012 received the NIKE prize, the most prestigious Polish literary prize.
It will be read in French by the writer Edgar Kosma at Cercle des Voyageurs (rue des grands carmes 18, 1000 Brussels), (at 19:00 and 20:30) and in Dutch by the writer Marc Reugebrink (at 19:45 and 21:15).

Practical information  |  About Marek Bieńczyk  |  | Other European authors and other venues  |  About Eunic in Brussels

Basing itself on the model of a project which has existed for several years in Prague, Eunic in Brussels invites Brussels-dwellers to come and listen to short readings of texts by foreign authors in a variety of spots which are close to one another (cafés, bookshops , meeting places), and all located in the centre of Brussels. This project is the Nuit de la Littérature européenne.

Marek Bieńczyk was born in Warsaw in 1956. A novelist, essayist, translator of Kundera and Cioran, and literary historian, this avowed Francophile is also a recognised oenologist. His first novel, entitled Terminal, which he wrote in 1994, is a "postmodern love story" which launched him on the Polish literary scene. The writing which followed, notably his novel Tworki (1999) and his essays on melancholy (1998, 2002), confirmed his position.
His latest piece of work, Książka Twarzy(Le Livre des visages, 2012), was awarded the prestigious Polish NIKE prize.

Text reading during Literatyure Night: Le Champion se retire - De Kampioen neemt afscheid (Czempion odchodzi), in an original translation by Cécile BocianowskiFR and Alexandre PopowyczNL.
The text is taken from Książka Twarzy (The Facebook). This work is a compilation of 32 short texts  – mostly on literary subjects – which recived the NIKE prize in 2012, which is the biggest Polish literature prize. In this compilation, the author reveals himself by allowing his pen to describe the indescribable in a gesture, a word or an emotion. It is a writer looking in a mirror which reflects back at him his intimate geography and his melancholy, his love of romantic literature and his passion for sport. Incidentally, the text Le champion se retire comments on Andre Agassi’s last match. Not to mention tears. And his physiognomy. And Gilles Deleuze too…
